Bank of Montreal News

Bank of Montreal, the fourth largest bank in Canada is targeting the Canadian small business segment. The Bank hopes to offset an expected slump in personal loan growth. To support the target, Bank of Montreal now is in the process of adding 150 small-business banking specialists that will focus on business with sales under C$5 million. It seems Bank of Montreal serious with its target.

The number could rise to 300 in the near future as the bank moves further into the sector, said Gail Cocker, BMO's head of commercial banking. "This is a large and growing segment that has unique needs that we need to pay attention to and understand, and within that size group itself there's a lot of opportunity," she added.

The Bank of Montreal (BMO) itself was founded in 1817. BMO is a major international bank with a large amount of connections across Canada and around the world.

BMO operates as BMO Bank of Montreal and has more than 900 branches, serving over seven million customers in Canada. The company also has substantial operations in the Chicago area and elsewhere in the United States, where it operates as Harris Bank and as BMO Harris.
